Welcome to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Graduate Studies Program

Our Graduate Program is an award-winning program, recognized by students and faculty as one of the best “student- centered” research training opportunities at UBC.

According to the 2024 ranking of the pathology departments at 1285 universities in the world, the UBC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is ranked #28 in the World, #24 in North America and #2 in Canada.

        • All incoming students must demonstrate a strong commitment to medical research through prior research experience or quality references from university faculty members who can speak about the student’s potential as a researcher.
        • The majority of research projects study the mechanisms of disease through a variety of approaches, from in vitro to animal and human studies, and/or the discovery of biomarkers to predict or detect disease.
        • Our supervisors are national and international leaders in their fields.
        • Our graduates are prepared to successfully enter their research careers, be it in academia or industry, or to pursue other careers where a strong biomedical knowledge is desired.
        • We recruit trainees with undergraduate degrees in disciplines such as biology, biochemistry, physiology, genetics and medicine.
        • We do not train physicians for careers in Clinical Pathology.
        • We welcome trainees from under-represented groups.

B.C. is home to the fastest-growing life sciences sector in Canada, counting over 1,100 companies employing 18,000 British Columbians working on innovations and research to improve health.

Our website is intended for those trainees who are considering applying to our program and those who are already accepted.   We hope the information is useful but if you cannot find what you need please email our first point of contact at Graduate Admissions
